Does anyone even follow the traditional conservative ideology anymore? None of the people you named would be considered a conservative by Edmund Burke, I can promise you that.

Libertarianism, however, is a very solid ideology. Sometimes libertarianism is called "conservatism" by people, but it has little in common. Libertarianism does not look back; it looks forward, towards the economics of the future, where the governments do not interfere in people's affairs, and individuals interact directly economically, without any apparent mediators, and definitely without the bureaucrats running the show.
Among prominent libertarians, I could mention many names, but I do not think anyone has ever outdone Ayn Rand. She simply got everything right, and, unlike many solid economists such as Milton Friedman, her system is more than something that maximizes the efficiency; it is something that is both economically and morally right. The idea that compassion must come from self-love followed by projection, rather than from some "objective good" notion, is extremely empowering, and accepting it opens all the doors in life to the individual. The idea that self-love is good, that greed is good, that individual success is good - this is what made America what it is a long time ago, and this is what will (hopefully) get it on top of the world once again in the future, when the current socialist and nationalist waves die out.
So vote for people like Rand Paul. Many call him a conservative, and while it is not so in reality, if that is the label that makes it easier for people to accept him - then might as well call him that. Choose people who promote individual liberty and reject collectivism and other authoritarian ideologies, and this way we can save the ideas of the Founding Fathers from melting in the pot of authoritarian ideologies.

Aya Rand ? Come now, there are far better examples of libertarian political theorist then her. She simply took Marx's writings and disagreed with everything he said, she never contributed anything new in that regard. Robert Nozick on the other hand, is considered the father of contemporary libertarianism for his work on several topics for example self ownership. Also Rand Paul is a libertarian? I had absolutely no idea that was the case.

I seriously doubt someone like her would pay any attention to Marx and his "ideas", past reading a short overview of them, shaking head and moving on. Marx is like Lenin, Hitler, Pol Pot and Mussolini: his narrative is easily destroyed by challenging several of his postulates, and the only reason anyone at all follows them is because, to some people, they "feel" good - but logically they make little sense. She escaped Soviet Union soon after revolution; she did not need to read Marx to know where those kinds of ideas lead, as she saw it with her own eyes.
Ayn Rand's teachings are not for everyone; they require a strong stomach to digest, because they strike right at the center of everything society tries to force on its members. To most people, reading her writings requires to go through the process of "Everything you have been told was wrong. Let me show you a better way". For me, it was easy to get into them, since my nature was strongly aligned with her values to begin with, and I had similar ideas to hers long before I even knew who she was.
The fact that you even compare someone like Marx to her shows where your alignment lays, and it is no wonder that you would not appreciate her ideas for what they are.
That said, she is no genius; she simply was a pioneer in the way to look at the world (and to champion it) which could not really take off in the world before, the world full of totalitarian ideologies, religions and dictators. In my view, everyone who gives any regard to the human individual, rather than thinking everyone a means to some "end", will not need to read her, because they already got the core right.

I don't know anybody who considers Robert Nozick the "father of contemporary libertarianism", I know countless people who consider Ayn Rand the mother of modern libertarianism. And she didn't just reverse everything Karl Marx said, she created a very detailed philosophy with an epistemological and metaphysical approach. If your basing your opinion of Ayn Rand on her terrible fiction novels (because they were terrible) then perhaps you should revisit her philosophy and give it a closer look. I'm a libertarian and frankly, I never heard of this Nozick character until you mentioned him. I read a few blurbs of his and so far, I'm fairly underwhelmed.

Traditional conservativism (I just realized how redundant those two words are together, but I'm gonna keep them there) didn't use collectivism as a principal. Progressivism, communism, and socialism all used collectivism as their basis. Conservativism was geared to resist those views. Leave us not forget the anti-communist sentiment that ruled the 50s. That sentiment was fueled by conservativism. Modern conservativism is an oxymoron. CONSERVATIVISM IS DEAD!!!!!

Since when was opinion and belief a mental disease? This goes for either side, and it's often best not to fight fire with fire. If conservatives accuse a liberal of something simply false, there is no justness in reciprocating. The same goes vice versa. You would think a fine, considerate man or woman would know better than to act so childish.
This blame game is only a testament to the pointless division between Conservatives and Liberals based on emotion rather than legitimate consideration.
